My Corner Fruit Vendor
One of the many things I love about living in New York is the vast amount of conveniences available. For instance, in the morning as I commute to work, there are 3 fruit stands I can frequent. There used to be 4 (currently out of business) – and I’ve tried them all. But, the one I go to every morning is on Park Ave right near my office. He’s there all day during the week and without fail is smiling every morning – no matter what I decide to buy.
Great business ideas inspired by my corner fruit vendor:
– Be convenient.
– Be consistent.
– Enjoy what you are doing.
Be convenient. In NYC, there are tons of people selling fruit on the sidewalk. All you have to do is think “fruit” and they are magically right there. Being available is one thing – being on the right side of the street near traffic patterns and foot traffic is key – Starbucks sealed that notion, hands down. But I’m convinced they got the idea from fruit sellers in NYC (no matter what the business case says)
Be consistent. My fruit vendor is out there all day, rain or shine; sun or snow. And the hours do not change. You can set your watch to him and not have to worry about paying 3xs at much for a banana at the deli. If I had to do that everyday, I’m not sure I’d be so consistent, which leads me to the last point….
Enjoy what you are doing. “You can catch a lot more flies with honey than with vinegar.” There is one fruit vendor that I do not go out of my way for because he did not treat me well one morning at 5 AM – and I have no reason to go back! If you don’t like what you are doing, people will notice it or you will snap at someone when you do not mean to. “Smile and the whole world will smile with you”.
If you are just doing a business to do business, you may figure out how to be successful, but you will not be fulfilled. Eventually someone will come along who does love what they are doing and that will be it.
